Recently I bought movie DevD, starring Abhay Deol, Kalki, Mahi It is directed by Anurag Kashyap and Produced by UTV Motion Pictures. It is a so called modern story of Devdas of latter day. My other guys found the movie an emotional atyachar and a complete wastage of time but I personally quite enjoyed the movie and rated it above average. The question which is portrayed through this movie is getting addictive is the solution or cause of the problems of our life?

The reason for liking the movie was simple as I didn’t slept in between any I didn’t watched in one go it took two views to saw it completely. The movie was able to hold me through all along despite knowing that it is modern day adaptation of old Devdas movie. Particularly taking note of Karan Johar’s and Bimal Roy’s “Devdas” despite famous names both the films failed to make it big.
The movie holds an ‘A’ certificate but mind you it is not a porn movie. The hero Dev is not your usual filmy hero. His actions are not admirable and viewers do not generate any sympathy for him. But he is not in a negative role either. His difficulties and relationship with Paro and Chandramukhi are well written and directed. The movie carries a dark humor in it.
The movie take hold of the pulse of the talented youth and pain who slips into the darker world due to its own bad habits. I was able to identify this youth from my surroundings and got some ease to know what is their logic-less logic to strive hard to feed for their bad habits. MMS of neighbour girls even in small towns is the most common menace we are crossing through.
People are afraid of themselves, of their own reality; their feelings most of all. People talk about how great love is, but is it there? Love hurts. Feelings are disturbing. People are taught that pain is evil and dangerous. How can they deal with love if they’re afraid to feel? Pain is meant to wake us up. People try to hide their pain. But they’re wrong. Pain is something to carry, like a radio. You feel your strength in the experience of pain. It’s all in how you carry it. That’s what matters. Pain is a feeling. Your feelings are a part of you. Your own reality. If you feel ashamed of them, and hide them, you’re letting society destroy your reality. You should stand up for your right to feel your pain.
I liked the movie because though in extremes, it was believable. I could believe the purposeless guy’s search for love. I believe that no matter how bad our circumstances, we make our choices. Dev chose to be a loner. Chanda chose to be a call girl. Paro chose to be with Bhuvan. All of them had it hard, but none were forced to make the choice. They made their choices of freewill. This is true for our lives too.
So you liked DevD. I loved DevD, not only for this new interpretation, specially the way certain ‘unforgetable events’ like the MMS and the Nanda-BMW case has been incorporated, there was much more to it. Little details say, like say the Paharganj hotel neon lights spellings ‘–HIV–’, the brilliant use of graffiti (did you notice the one on Dev’s hotel room which had George Bush’s head superimoposed on Kali)…. brilliant small details. I think that it will be very difficult for the directors to surpass this film, for this year, though, this film getting the Filmfare award for best film is still not possible as always Shahrukh has fit the bill with his horrible Billu-hair stylist.
Its amazing how Kashyap portrays that a woman too can be sexual and not just objectified. As a society, we revelled in our coyness and DevD has single handedly demolished that attitude. Being blunt shall be in, and unapologetic too.
We all wanted our women bold. Kashyap had to make Dev D to tell us that!
I will have to watch the movie once again to scrutinize the minutest details you specified 😉 as I watched it on my 19 inch TFT.
