The legend of Janmashtami

by | Aug 14, 2009 | Idiosyncrasies

Krishna Janmashtami, one of the most popular festivals in India celebrates birth of Sri Krishna. Functions and prayer meetings are organised by Hindus to share the glory of their beloved God, Lord Krishna. The festival of Janmashtami is considered a very pious day by Hindus. People perform elaborate poojas during the festival and keep day long fast.

Lot of bhajan singing, hymn chanting and poojas are performed on this day. The main objective of Lord Krishna’s birth was to free Mother Earth from the wickedness of demons. Playing an important part in Mahabharata (legendary battle in Kurukshetra) and propagating the theory of bhakti and good karma were other important objectives.

The jannmashatami fast is also known as the fast of having different special meal which you can clearly depict from my Phalhaar serving dish. This often consists of sago (saboodana), singhara atta chappati, potatoes and salad. It may also include sweet potatoes, colocasia (arvi), kachalu, select vegetables and nuts. Many friends and especially younger family members these fasts as an excuse to treat on delicious ‘phalahar’ dishes. The time of breaking the fast may vary, this is so, because the time of performing pooja also differs from place to place. While some devotees choose to perform pooja at midnight and break fast, others perform pooja in the evening and have food.

Traditionally the hindu community celebrates the Janmashtami with long parades / marches accompanied by chants, music and festive mood along the city roads.

I found this Bhajna to be perfect for the occasion.
