Professional trap of Single Income and Single Identity. Don’t act like a mouse!

by | Sep 6, 2020 | Amusing, Critique

This era of Covid lockdown has taught lot of lessons to the middle and lower classes. A lot has already been said on the threats of single income. As per the investment guru Warren Buffett never depend on single income. One needs to always invest on to create a second source of income as well.

On the outside corporate world seems to be very glorious. The journey starts by first striving to get grab good grades in the education, this is what we are taught from grade school. After this you think you’ll be all set but then comes the real demon the struggle to get a good corporate job.

Because getting a good Job leads to happiness. And then one day you finally realize1 that, this is bullshit, It is a myth and a trap. When you dig deeper, the corporate world is fools gold.

When universities were first built, information was hard to come by. But we have now already arrived into the digital age. A time where we now have information at our finger tips. It’s unfortunate to see that we are still so reliant on good degrees for success!

Furthermore the successful careers don’t just happen and traditional career management advice simply doesn’t work in the professional world of today.

There’s no long-term reward for corporate loyalty working for although you still have to play the game as though you believe there is. The focus must always be on securing your own future first.

SISI, The crisis of single income & single identity is something which most of us are coping up with now days. In this context. I received a wonderful short story on my email which I’d like to share here on my blog.

A mouse was placed in a jar filled with grains. He was ecstatic with the plenty resource of food around him. Now he doesn’t need to do any of the leg work searching for food and can happily lead his life.

As he enjoyed the food grains, in few weeks time, he reached to the depths of the jar. Now he felt as if he was in some trap and he cannot come out of it. He has to completely depend on someone to put food grains in the same jar for him to survive.

He lost all his options as now he may even not get the food of his first choice and if he has to survive, he has to eat whatever has been pushed into the jar.

Here are the lessons from this scenario

  1. Short term pleasures can lead to long-term traps.
  2. If things are getting easier and you are getting comfy, you are getting trapped into the survival mode.
  3. When you are not using your potential, you are losing it.
  4. If you don’t take the corrective actions at right time, you will finish what you have and will be in no position to come out.

Are you able to relate? If yes, are you willing to do something now and start taking action to have a backup to counter your Single Income Single Identity (SISI) zone!

But as per the investment guru to reduce the risk, instead of starting a new venture, save and put money in the businesses that are running successfully. Always start with end in mind!

1 Not all but only who contemplate and are willing to hustle.
