Being in this world…

People are Good

by | Oct 27, 2010 | Productivity

Recently one of my good friends was sharing his experience of getting interviewed in front of a panel of judges for some good opportunity. He told me that how all the people gathered out there were fantastically pretending to be good where as he distinguished all of them to be cynical and sceptical.

Are all people really bad? What made him feel so? Generally, how we judge others majorly depend on our life condition & environment. What’s going on and how you relate to the situation? Who are our ideals? Recently I witnessed a news where cruel bull elephants were removed from the vicinity of elephant herds with babies for the reason what these baby elephants is going to learn as their ideals who were indulged in killing rhinos.

At least for someone the worst person can be good, we can’t count someone to be good because he loves and supports his family rather not paying his employees on time. We certainly need some criteria by which we can judge whether a person is good. Good means to be morally admirable, honest, virtuous, or pious. In fact good is nothing short of choosing to do what is right over what is wrong because of our moral character. Being just above the level of behaving in a wrong manner does not make us good.

We must learn that what is wrong. Our inventive nature leads us all the time to learn what is right and what is wrong. There is an inner instinct that distinguishes between right and wrong. Every child has to learn the difference between right and wrong. Question is that if we never learn right from wrong, we will continue down the wrong path. We do not choose to do what is right on our own. We have to learn what is right and we have to be taught to do what is right.

Generally people are good. We certainly want to live our lives morally. Our basic instict is good naturally Milgram experiment but we may behave differently under different conditions. We do not want to hurt or see anyone hurt. It doesn’t ensure that there are no bad people. One might have a loving, solid family foundation, supportive, gentle and encouraging, yet still have evil minded tendencies. Yet another may come from an abusive background, which logically, would make them more likely to be a bad person with no respect for another human being. Even for the cruelty of Nazis & Taliban, all of them are guided by someone to endure hardship to reach the bright horizon.

If we feel that people are bad then they really are and on contrary if we think that they are good then again we are entirely right. Now the choice lies with us. We have to learn to be good. Goodness is associated to several things when it we consider the human condition. Good associates to the essence of our morals, the existence of our character, the focus of our ethics and the nature of our spiritual well being. Goodness is at the centre of our being.

All religions of the world announce humankind as “GOOD”. Logically I desperately wish to consider that people are intrinsically of good quality.
