A Broken Road and a Life Lesson

The Shortcut That Almost Cost Me Everything

Sometimes, in the rush of life, we act impulsively without fully considering the consequences of our actions. This is exactly what I learned during an incident that could have easily ended in disaster, had I not taken a step back at the right moment.

It all started when an old friend, whom I hadn’t seen in a while, called me to meet on very short notice. Though it was a challenge given my schedule, I decided to go ahead and meet him.

The excitement of reconnecting with a close friend after a long gap was enough to motivate me to make it happen, even at the expense of my convenience.

I drove to pick him up, and on the way, I called another friend, who was in the middle of a lecture. After his lecture, when he called me back, I invited him to join us as well.

With a few back-and-forth calls, he managed to rearrange his plans and agreed to meet us. The excitement was building, and I couldn’t wait for the reunion. Eager to get to them quickly, I decided to take several shortcuts, hoping to shave some time off my journey.

However, one of these shortcuts took me down a narrow, winding road that was in disrepair. I reached a point where the road was broken on the side. Initially, I thought it would be easy to cross.

I got out of the car to inspect the situation and estimated that if I drove close enough to the mountain wall, I would be able to safely pass through. Confident in my judgment, I got back into the car and started to move forward.

But then, a sinking feeling hit me. I realized I couldn’t see the downhill side of the road. At that moment, I hesitated and got out again to take a second look. I measured the situation with my eyes and thoughts, but still couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right.

A third time, I climbed into the car, but as I started to inch forward, something clicked in my mind. A red flag flashed in my head, and I suddenly imagined my car slipping off the road and tumbling into the valley below. My heart sank.

I got out of the car again, feeling disoriented, and used my footsteps to measure the distance of the drop from the narrow side of the road, it was six steps, and then I measured the width of my car it was seven steps.

In that moment, the gravity of the situation hit me hard. I had been so close to making a rash decision, driven by impatience and the excitement of meeting friends.

As I sat there in shock, questioning what I had almost done, a man appeared out of nowhere. He warned me not to take any risks and suggested I turn around and take the longer route instead. I immediately called my friends to update them about the situation and decided to backtrack.

In the end, I picked up my friends and we had a great time together, but the shock of the incident stayed with me. I couldn’t shake the thought of how close I had come to making a potentially life-threatening mistake.

What stood out to me was the realization that, sometimes, we act impulsively under the influence of inertia, rushing through decisions without fully thinking them through. Hasty decisions, driven by excitement or impatience, can lead to disastrous outcomes.

This incident reminded me of the importance of being mindful in our actions. Whether on the road, at work, or in personal relationships, we need to pause, assess the situation carefully, and consider all variables before moving forward.

Our hasty attitude can cloud our judgment, but taking the time to reflect-no matter how small the decision-can often be the difference between safety and disaster. In many areas of life, being mindful and present in the moment not only protects us from harm but can also lead to better decisions and outcomes in the long run.
