Big Expactations Small Car

by | Mar 24, 2009 | Idiosyncrasies

India was desperately requiring some arrangement for its largest strata of middle class and it is the perfect time to realise their aspirations and yearnings. Much awaited dreamof Ratan Data The cheapest car of the world Nano has already flooded with praise from all over the world. I was glad to witness the story of India’s growth.Nano is an example of Man’s romance with mobility.

Nano

Priced at $2,500 or Rs 1 lakh at the dealer end, the car is the cheapest four-wheeler in the world. The next cheapest in the race was claimed the Chinese Chery Q3, and Russian Lada which costs $5,000 (Rs 2 lakh INR) which uses the older technology.

Indexed for consumer price inflation, the Nano is less than half the price of the 1983 Maruti 800, which was Rs 48,000.

The tale of the Nano is not only of the auto industry. It is a gate way for Modern India, an enthusiastic, ambitious nation with a combination of engineering talent, a desire for low costs and value. The innovation is a turning point in India’s progress. The small vehicle shall make millions of Indians mobile. The car reportedly meets the required benchmarks on safety, fuel efficiency and emission norms. As per Tata, it will be one of the greenest vehicles around.

It was Ratan Tata’s (“India’s Henry Ford” the new tag) long pending dream despite being born to luxury, he was rightly able to identify the hot button of need of the Indian family, riding four on a two wheeler for a wet ride. The new metal bodied car with four doors and capable of seating four adults in relative comfort, it is designed to accommodate the average Indian family.

Ratan tataGrey haired Ratan Tata, with a grim look on his face, I always adored him for avoiding being into the limelight. He seems to be a self-actualised person who is set to develop deep social interest and compassion.

Tata dramatically had won the technological and political battle fronts. The controversy surrounding the policy on SEZ, Singur in West Bengal, the site for the Nano factory, was the rallying point for protestors.

The biggest challenge was to keep the balance between cost and performance the idea of putting the engine in the rear also turned out to be a major turning point in the design process. It was Tata, a trained architect himself, who wanted a car tall enough to hold his 6 ft tall frame. People say he once joked in the factory that he wanted to drive the car himself at the launch. That is how the car gets its tall boy looks. The Nano is not an urban phenomenon but for semi-urban and rural markets too; after decades, the Indian common man is finally going to have option.

It was an incredibly tough four year journey when in year 2003, a four-member team from Tata Motors was asked to work on a new project. While the engineers were insisting constant design changes Mr Tata was very clear that it had to be a complete car. It included lots of challenges to the story. But the team eventually developed and delivered a car that meets the world’s expectations. The car has probably got more media attention than it expected with its much-publicised price tag of cheapest car of the world.

So, Mr Tata your quiet moment of triumph was deserved and it makes Nano as a perfect example of following ones shining dreams.

This dream car is going to be the worst traffic nightmare on road. Already m-800 had choked Shimla roads. Imagine the state of traffic with Nanos on the road. What we need today is a good public transport system. I don’t dig for Nano at all.

@Nityin Yes it is turning to be the real traffic nightmare. But when one contemplates individually for outing the fact remains that it is nice idea to have one separate vehicle!

I am mesmerized by the mankind winning on technological challenges! I hope very soon the technology will come up with another breakthrough for traffic difficulty!
