Experiments Are Essential For Startups – If you are not ready to fail you can’t learn to succeed

Experiment

When we don’t decide and keep on putting it off, clutter piles up around us, choices get postponed which consequently adds up to stress. We forget that our decisions are not final choices, but experiments.

Many startups keep on struggling to answer the following questions: What might please today’s customers at the expense of tomorrow’s? What should we work on next? What are things that might anger customers? Which customer opinions should we listen to, if any? How should we prioritize across the many features we could build? Which features are essential to the successful product?

These are some of the questions teams struggle to answer if they have followed the “let’s just ship a product and see what happens” plan,  ‘Just do it’ attitude. Unfortunately, if the plan is to see what happens, a team is guaranteed to succeed at seeing what happens but won’t necessarily gain validated learning. This is one of the most important lessons of the scientific method: if you cannot fail, you cannot learn.

When you’re just conducting experiments, there’s no failure. Any result is learning. If there’s no failure, you don’t have to worry. Simply smile, and allow yourself to have fun with experiments.
