How to publish a book?

by | Dec 5, 2012 | Critique

As a critique I recall the words of William of Baskerville in Umberto Eco’s – The Name of the Rose“Books are not made to be believed, but to be subjected to inquiry”.  Yet ‘APE’ answers everything on self-publishing.

This post is a book review of ‘APE’ authored by Guy Kawasaki & Shawn Welch.

I believe the APE‘s most part is authors’ real experiences which has been crafted in the shape of this wonderful knowledge resource. If you are also in a quest that ‘How to publish your book?’ APE could be simply an awesome read for you.

It is the outcome of Guy’s experience when his brain fried for the fact that after the launch of Enchantment, Guy could not fill an order for 500 e-book copies. Because of this experience, he self-published his next idea, and learned first hand that self-publishing is a complex, confusing, and idiosyncratic process.

Writing a book isn’t an easy process nor is it always enjoyable, but it’s one of life’s most satisfying achievements. – Guy Kawasaki

All about APE

APE conatins 300 pages of tactical and practical inspiration, it focuses on the fact that A successful self-publisher must fill three roles: Author, Publisher, and Entrepreneur — or APE. The first seven chapters speak as an author, next fourteen chapters focus on the perspective as a publisher and the last eight chapters talk about entrepreneurial effort for your book.

Guy and Shawn call this “artisanal publishing”, this is for writers who love their craft, and who control every aspect of the process. If you aren’t doing it you are going a dinosaur way :). The theme of APE is quite powerful and makes a lot of sense when a self-publisher successfully fills three roles—author, publisher and entrepreneur—the potential benefits are greater than with traditional publishing.

Name: APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur – How to Publish a Book
ISBN:  978-0-9885231-1-1

It throws a question Should you really write a book? Then it guides in a systematic fashion that how to write and get it financed. It also shares some tools for writers. The book addresses most of the self-publishing Issues, right from designing the cover page to pricing and distribution and selling audible electronic versions of your book. And then it talks about guerrilla-marketing to building an enchanting personal brand.

Like always Guy has tried his level best to try making people best. The sources and evidences of APE are quite interesting. It is so interactive that I was able to finish it in a single day. Also it is very well-organized and clearly written so I’ll give full marks to the authors. It is coming out next week i.e. December 10th.
