Google has launched the next version of Android OS, nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich, a thing of reality. The Galaxy Nexus is the most ambitious smartphone out at the moment and it is looking like it is ready to blow Apple away. Better known as Android 4.0, the update offers a massive redesign to the user interface and adds a plethora of new features. J.K. Shin (R), President and head of mobile communications business from Samsung, and Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Google Mobile, unveiled the Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone to feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a HD Super AMOLED display, during a news conference in Hong Kong October 19, 2011.

The Galaxy Nexus is 8.9 millimeters thick and it has been brought to bridge the gap between the two totally separate operating systems Gingerbread version 2.4 and Honeycomb 3.0 on Android. Ice Cream Sandwich also includes enhancements in almost every native app within Android itself. Some of the highlights include an NFC-enabled feature called Android Beam, offline search in Gmail, new lock screen features and a fancy unlocking method called “Face Unlock,” which uses facial recognition to ensure strangers can’t use your phone without permission. It will be available in the U.S., Europe and Asia beginning in November.

Some of the specs features are:

  • Its curved shape
  • A 1.2 gigahertz dual-core processor
  • A 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD screen with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage
  • A 5-megapixel camera
  • A 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats
  • Support for 1080p HD video capture and playback.

In the smartphone market this launch comes at a critical time when Apple and its closest rival Samsung are locked in lawsuits all over the world regarding patent infrigement. Apple has already sued the Samsung, of allegedly copying its iPhone and iPad tablet designs and Samsung is banned from selling its tablet in Australia and Germany.
