Mera Rang De Basanti Chola

Today is Shaheed Diwas in the memories of Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their 79th martyrdom anniversary. No one can forget the heroic sacrifice made by three young patriots on 23 Mar, 1931. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru gladly kissed the gallows on this day by singing the song that praises their motherland.

During this horrific time under Britain’s rule, Bhagat Singh and several great revolutionaries like Chandrashekhar Azad, Lala Lajpat Rai, Sukhdev spread the anti-British message across India.

When Bhagat Singh’s father petitioned the British government to pardon his son, Bhagat Singh quoted Terence MacSwiney and said “”I am confident that my death will do more to smash the British Empire than my release” and told his father to withdraw the petition.

While in prison, Bhagat Singh and two others had written a letter to the Viceroy asking him to treat them as prisoners of war and hence to execute them by firing squad and not by hanging. Prannath Mehta, Bhagat Singh’s friend, visited him in the jail on March 20, four days before his execution, with a draft letter for mercy, but he declined to sign it.

In today’s world where India has made its place prominent in the world map one cannot forget their contribution of who sacrificed their lives for providing us the India we are living in.

Today after 79 years Indians didn’t let the world forget the contribution of these great men to give us a free India. Indians from all over the world flooded the micro blogging site Twitter to remember and pay respect to their contribution in the freedom struggle for an independent India. The three heroes trended on Twitter the entire day. The social networking site is flooded with patriotic messages. The Indian Twitter brigade is making sure that the heroes of Indian history live in the hearts and minds of people forever. Our tweets does its bit and pays due respect and love to these three heroes of India.

“If the deaf are to hear, the sound has to be very loud…” – Bhagat Singh
